THE LEGEND Of Luke Kelly Show, a celebration of arguably Ireland’s greatest folk-singer of all time, comes to the Town Hall this Sunday at 8pm.

Damien Dempsey will play Galway Arts Festival Big Top in a double bill with Glen Hansard on Thursday July 25.

“I’LL TELL you something, I mightn’t be in this business at all if it wasn’t for a Galwayman, Des Kelly,” Phil Coulter tells me during our interview on Tuesday morning. “He was the leader of the Capitol Showband who were the biggest in Ireland when I was a student in Queen’s in Belfast.”

On January 30, 1984 it is said that the whole of Dublin grieved the early death of Luke Kelly. He left an indelible mark as being the greatest folk artist of the 20th century. In October 2001 A Tribute to Luke Kelly was launched before an audience which included Luke’s siblings and relations. As a result of the show’s success the band played to a full house for three months at the Olympia Dublin.

So how do you describe Damien Dempsey’s music - take some reggae, fuse it with traditional Irish music, add in rock and folk, and put it all through a grounded working class worldly aware, yet caring consciousness, and you are some of the way there. And on Tuesday, November 15 in the Royal Theatre, Castlebar you can experience it all for yourself.

THREE EXCITING local acts take to the stage tonight for Citóg at the Cellar. My Fellow Sponges are a diverse group from Galway with a taste for theatrics. This multi-talented group deliver an electric live show using instruments such as the banjo, glockenspiel, double bass, trumpet, and piano.
